This is a good movie. The acting is fine as well as the story. This is not one of those million dollar cheesy viking/roman movies, i.e. Eagle and Centurion, perhaps that's why the previous reviewer did not like the movie.

There are no Hollywood invested weird characters in this movie, nor million dollar CGI. It's all about the story and the acting. I think they did a good job and I am only writing this review (my first & probably last) because of the previous reviewer's harsh and strange comments. This is not as good as Ben Hur but it's a lot better than Eagle and Centurion.

I think your chances of enjoying this movie increases if you're not burdened by having a penis and/or a brain.The central theme seems to be that most males (except for a gay dance instructor) are complete and utter misogynistic assholes and perverts, not to mention racists. The two girls technically look good dancing, of course, but this movie is so full of self-righteousness and feministic self-pity that it somehow manages to make even a pair as gorgeous as these two come across as almost completely devoid of any sexiness. Of course, that's probably the last thing they're aiming to be -- I'm just warning any fellow male viewers out there who somehow think this movie is a good source for eye-candy. It's really not. Most characters are stereotypical caricatures and you're left with little else than the clear impression that the writers want to inform you that it's not easy to a be a woman, and especially not a non-caucasian immigrant woman. Which I'm sure is correct, to some extent, but it makes for a god-awful, hysterically untertaining(TM) movie.

Cliché of a biopic, unfocused, the film doesn't know if its about Raymond's life or his empire or his relationship with his daughter, it's trying really quickly to cover far too many events in 100 minutesIt's fast for no reason, badly filmed, badly edited, not engaging, you don't feel much when his daughter dies, which should be tragic, There's a few good ideas of film making, like the photo shoot that looks like Men Only ages with kitschy artwork alas it's really poorly executedSteve Coogan is insufferable in this film, he's not acting anything else than him, you just ve the feeling of watching a film about him in costume period, shame for the female actress who are all excellent There's too many dialogues, some of them are good but some are just unnecessary , it just makes the film suffocating and leaves very little space for emotionsYou just have the feeling the film was wrapped up in two days, I'm usually a big fan of Winterbottom but I must say I'm clearly unimpressed with this

It's trying hard to be original but it's just another biopic with fast editing and a few breaking walls,

With material like Paul Raymond's fascinating life it's a shame to end up with such a terribly flawed film

If not for Johnny Depp, this big-budget revisionist interpretation of the classic 'Lone Ranger' character would probably never have happened. Sure, the baby-boomer generation of the 1950s might remember the popular TV show in which Clayton Moore was the titular character, but there is scarcely any trace left of the masked ex-Texas Ranger in popular culture half a century later. That reality isn't lost on Depp nor his 'Pirates of the Caribbean' director Gore Verbinski; rather than keep to the spirit of previous incarnations, their reboot essentially applies the sensibilities of their previous franchise-spawning 'Pirates' venture to the story of two outlaws in the Wild West.

Notwithstanding the title, it is the Lone Ranger's sidekick Tonto who takes centre-stage here. His trademark eccentricity in glorious display, Depp's Tonto has a face painted white with four vertical black streaks and most distinctively, a dead crow perched atop his forehead which he obsessively feeds. Suffice to say that this is not the Tonto that Jay Silverheels used to play in the TV series; instead, this is a distinctively Depp creation, one that immediately recalls his Jack Sparrow kookiness but is yet more grounded and complex and in our opinion his most intriguing character part yet.

This is not a movie to be taken seriously. It is an action thriller, using elements from real life that are exaggerated for dramatic effect. Yes, there are traitors discovered in our government from time to time. Yes, there are terrorists who would like to blow up more of our signature landmarks. Yes, there are a lot of good law enforcement officers out there who think they'd make good top-level security agents. Yes, we have a black president. Yes, there are some pretty smart teenage girls out there. Yes, there have been some pretty dumb Generals in the United State military command structure. Exaggerate the concepts and you have a government coup orchestrated from within the White House, that enables terrorists to get in with explosives and take hostages, and a guy who just applied for the Secret Service just happens to be taking his daughter on a White House tour when the terrorists attack, and his daughter plays a pivotal role in warding off nuclear war by mere seconds on the clock. I'll say that again. If not for a teenage girl, this flick ends with nuclear war breaking out. The timing of media coverage with events as they are happening is a dead giveaway that this is not to be taken seriously, as American media are woefully inadequate in their abilities to discern facts. This movie is no more realistic than your typical Die Hard flick, but nobody's slamming Bruce Willis for dumping trash on us. Total escapist action fun. No Academy Award performances, no deep moral lessons, not worth paying full price, see it during matinée discount times. Three stars out of five.
